Shacknews writer Lucas White recalls the forgotten fun of late-90s gaming in their 8/10 review of Agent 64: Spies Never Die, the N64-inspired first-person shooter by solo developer Replicant D6, available now on PC via Steam! Read how Agent 64: Spies Never Die reclassifies the FPS genre in 2026 by wearing its inspirations on its sleeve like a pair of refined, shiny cufflinks.

Back in the day, the Nintendo 64 day specifically, games like this (multiplayer action games) were defined as much by their depth of options as they were for their specific gameplay and presentational styles. The era was all about game modes, settings, modifiers, unlockables, anything the developers could think of to give late-90s gamers the biggest bang for their bucks. And since development costs and timetables weren’t insane like they are today, there was no apparent need to hold back when it came to just providing a wealth of Things to Do. This is where Agent 64 really shines.

There’s a story mode, there are challenges, there are bizarre unlockable alternative takes on levels full of bizarre modifiers, there are modes that let you tinker with your own modifiers, there’s co-op for the story, there’s local split-screen multiplayer, there’s online multiplayer, there’s stuff I’m probably forgetting to mention because there’s so much. Agent 64 is as jam-packed as you’d imagine a Nintendo 64 tribute game ought to be, and that’s pretty neat. You can even get big head mode. Real ones know.

Secrets and bullets collide in Agent 64: Spies Never Die as friends in Story Mode co-op become foes in fully customizable online multiplayer modes alongside a host of unlockable modifiers to shape every match differently.
