Emma Kidwell of Gamasutra reported on 3DRealms‘ newest title, Ion Maiden, and how the team resurrected the engine they used to create Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior in the 90s.

Emma quoted Josh Olin, formerly VP of publishing at 3D Realms, on why the retro look and feel of Ion Maiden is so special.

What’s really special about it is that it’s built on the 90s era Build engine. So it’s not like Unreal or Unity, dumbed-down to look retro. It is a retro engine, retrofitted to run on modern hardware.

Ion Maiden is an old-school first-person shooter from 3D Realms and Voidpoint, and will launch on Windows PC, Mac, and Linux in Q3 2018. Available now in Early access, players who buy the game on Steam will be granted immediate access to an exclusive multi-hour preview campaign ahead of the full game’s release later this year.
