GamesRadar recently had the chance to interview Oren Koren, the solo developer responsible for Don’t Lose Aggro, the single-player action roguelite inspired by MMO raids. The interview explores the challenges of developing a game on your own, and distilling some core concepts of MMORPGs into a single-player title.
Don’t Lose Aggro primarily focuses on the experience of tanking in an MMORPG, that is keeping the attention of the biggest baddies in the room so your squishier party memebers can focus on dealing damage. But Koren also wanted to focus on how tanks are often the unsung heroes of MMORPGs.
While Don’t Lose Aggro is a single player title, the NPC in your party will still complain if they start taking too much damage. “For me at least, that’s an instant reminder of what it feels like to tank,” Koren says. “Because more often than not, a tank is a job where, even if you do your best, you might still get some heat from your group. And I find that very interesting, that I can provide these different social aspects in a single-player game.”
